Works on the project of development of the deep geological repository started in 1994 and they were continuation of works performed in the former CSFR. The project is financed from the Government fund for liquidation of nuclear energy facilities and treatment of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. This fund is created from contributions of generators of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel and by the government's contributions. In the past the buyer of the works within development of deep repository was Slovenské elektrárne, a.s. After privatization of Slovenské elektrárne these activities are assured by Nuclear Decommissioning Company (Jadrová vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a.s).

In the period of years 1996–2001 two stages of the project Development of Deep repository were completed. Within the completed stages tasks were solved in the area of project and implementation activities, selection of locality, safety analyses and engagement of the public. Within the framework of the works in the next period, results of solutions must assure mastering and ability to document all important conditions of preparation and implementation of the deep repository, from which the most important is denoting of the locality, including its acceptability by the public. Then preparation phase ending with construction permit will continue from this important milestone. Consecutively, implementation part will proceed, which will be enclosed by closing the deep repository.

The works are running on preparation of three-dimensional computer models of localities potentially suitable for storage location. These models emanate from contemporary knowledge from geology, petrography, seismicity, neotectonics, hydrogeology and geochemistry of the localities. Interactions between host environment (loams or granites) and engineering barriers, possible changes of host rock and of engineering barriers invocated by expected geochemical processes, are being appreciated.

Elaborated is also the first design of container, container sealing in boreholes, also basic requirements for physical and chemical properties of damper and sealing materials are defined, which are applicable for sealing and enclosure of storage boreholes and tunnels, shafts and communication areas.

Elaborated is the first design of deep geological repository for hypothetical locality and two rock environments (loam and crystallic) and conceptual designs concerning the technical aspects of operation of deep and surface facilities. Preliminary technological, technical and economical requirements as well as time requirements on implementation were assessed and priorities of the construction preparation were determined.

The current state of selection of a locality for the deep repository site is characterised by a critical assessment of existing geological data from surveys of the Slovak Republic and selection of areas in which potentially suitable localities for deep repository may be found. A detailed geological survey is subsequently performed in these areas. Selection of the host rock is still open — crystal and clay rock is being considered.

Apart from Slovak organizations solution-finding groups from the Czech Republic and Great Britain are also taking part in finding a solution for the program for deep repository development. Each year seminars focusing on exchange of information on the state of programs in both republics are organized with specialists from the Czech Republic. Specialists from the Slovak solution-finding organizations have undertaken study resident ships at multiple important European workplaces and have presented the results of their work at multiple symposiums and conferences abroad.
