Decontamination of Spent Fuel Pools and Other Contaminated Tanks in the V1 NPP – Part 1

Project identification: D2.1

Project name

Decontamination of Spent Fuel Pools and Other Contaminated Tanks in the V1 NPP – Part 1

project status

Completed

Description

Objectives:
1. Remove the loose surface contamination of internal surfaces of the tanks, storage pool and universal pit to reduce the risk of spreading radioactive contamination of workplaces, working environment and workers during decommissioning.

2. Remove sludge, sediments, etc. of the tanks, storage pool and universal pit.

The tanks and pools affected by this project are located in buildings SO 800:V1 (Reactor Building) and SO801:V1 (Auxiliary Operations Building):

The reduction of radiological contamination by a variety of chemical and physical techniques implies the following benefits:

  • Removal of loose radioactive contaminants and fixing the remaining contamination in place in preparation for further treatment,
  • Reduction of radiation exposure of workers who will carry out subsequent dismantling activities in the areas where the tanks and pools are located.
  • Reduction of the volume of radioactive material requiring storage and disposal.
  • Limiting costs of maintenance and surveillance during waiting periods prior to dismantling;
  • Facilitating final dismantling, disassembly and cutting and the resulting operations of manipulation and handling;
  • Reduction of additional facilities required to ensure safety and protection during operations.
