Bituminization Facility

Galéria

The Bituminization Line Nuclear Facility can be found at Jaslovské Bohunice, in the compound of the A1 power plant, which is currently being decommissioned. The liquid RAW from the V1 and V2 NPPs is transported here using transport containers and special transport vehicles, deploying their load at a special receptacle at the bituminization line. Liquid RAW from the A1 NPP is transported in pipelines, right into the bituminization line storage tanks. Based on a sample analysis of the contents of the storage tanks, an adequate chemical treatment is then applied.

The treated liquid RAW, which is pumped into the working tank, is steam-heated to 80 °C and, using dosing pumps, it is fed to the film rotor evaporator. The evaporator then dehydrates and simultaneously fixates the RAW into a bituminization matrix. The bitumen, heated to 140 °C, and the liquid RAW are tangentially sprayed into the evaporator and homogenously spread over the stator surface, by means of special swinging paddles. The surface of the stator is heated with steam, causing the water to evaporate from the liquid RAW and, at the same time, the created salts to stick to the fixation matrix — the bitumen. The resulting product is put into 200 liter zinc-coated barrels. After cooling down, a full barrel is sealed, using a capping machine, and transported into the interim storage facility.

Aside from the liquid RAW processing lines, the facility also houses a discontinuous ionex bituminization line. The RAW in question, which is to be processed, is transported in water-filled containers or in 200 l zinc-coated barrels. The water and the solid particle mixture are pumped from the storage tanks into the macerator, where the solid particles are grinded. Then the waste is fed into the decanter, where all particles larger than 0.01 mm are separated from the water. The solid phase is transported to a drying facility and, after drying, a screw conveyor moves it into a mixer, where the dry residue is mixed with the fixation matrix — the bitumen.

The final product, a sealed zinc-coated 200 l barrel is placed in the interim storage facility. After a physical-chemical analysis and a radiation check, the 200 l barrels are loaded into fiber-reinforced concrete containers and after fixation with a suitable matrix, transported away for permanent storage, at the Mochovce NRWR.
