Radiation Protection
All relevant activities in the field of radiation protection are, before their approval and in course of their implementation, subject to dose rate optimization process in line with effective legislation and internal quality assurance system of company JAVYS, a.s.
In the working environment of the controlled area of nuclear facilities under the administration of company JAVYS, a.s. systematic monitoring of the workplaces’ radiation properties, operative and official monitoring of received dose rates are performed and at the same time compliance with radiation protection principles and ALARA principle during the movement of persons in the controlled area is controlled.
The controlling and planning of exposition of individuals is in compliance with the Act No. 87/2018 Coll. and internal regulations of company JAVYS, a.s. One of the radiation protection level indicators being closely monitored regarding the individuals working in the controlled area of nuclear facilities is the maximum effective dose, which does not exceed the annual set limits (50 mSv).
Due to their operation, the nuclear facilities of company JAVYS, a.s. release limited quantities of radioactive gaseous and liquid substances into the environment in a controlled manner. Their quantity is very low and they only have a minor impact on the population. The levels of activities of exhausts released into the atmosphere and hydrosphere in a controlled manner represent only insignificant fractions of values permitted by the state regulatory authority (Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic).
The impact of the operations on radiation loads within the population is being monitored by company JAVYS, a.s. using the environment radiation monitoring laboratories in Trnava and Levice. The laboratories monitor the environment using a network of stations distributed into three circles around the nuclear facilities as well as by lab analysis of samples taken from the environment. The monitoring stations are equipped with stationary probes for continuous evaluation of doses and the volumetric radioactivity of the air and iodine. The monitoring results are wirelessly transmitted to selected computers on continuous monitoring sites. Samples from the environment, which are evaluated in laboratories, are taken from places according to the monitoring plan, which is approved by the Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic. The measurement results and the analyses of 1,700 air, soil, water, vegetation and agricultural product samples for each year prove a minimal impact of nuclear facilities under operation in Jaslovské Bohunice and Mochovce on the environment.
The evaluation of the impact of operations on the radiation doses received by the population is performed once a year by JAVYS using a special programme. The programme, which applies internationally accepted standards of models of the spread of radioactive substances, takes local conditions into account and uses statistic data, is also approved by the state authority. The programme’s input encompasses all gaseous and liquid emissions from the JAVYS nuclear facilities, as well as actual meteorological data. The programme can evaluate the irradiation of the population within a 100 km radius, which means also within the neighbouring countries (Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic). The maximum computed amounts of individual effective doses are many times lower than the radiation loads received by the population from the natural radiation background and medical diagnostic procedures.
