First Stage of V1 NPP Decommissioning

The NRA SR resolution No. 400/2011 on the approval of the first stage of V1 NPP decommissioning of the 19th of July 2011 was issued on the basis of application of company JAVYS, a.s., dated 17th of December 2010 and the approval from the European Commission in accordance with article 37 of the EURATOM Treaty.

The application included 21 documents, which were thoroughly examined and, among other things, contained statements and resolution by the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic and other relevant state administration authorities, plan for management and transport of RAW and management of conventional waste, quality system documentation and quality requirements for the nuclear facility, employee training system, internal emergency plan, the V1 NPP emergency planning zone analysis, limits and requirements for safe decommissioning, plan for the first stage of decommissioning, decommissioning concept for the subsequent stage and provision of the financial covering for nuclear damage liability. In plans for management of conventional and radioactive waste, great emphasis was laid upon minimization of waste volumes and maximization of environmental recycling of materials released to the environment.

The NRA SR resolution No. 400/2011 on the approval of the first stage of V1 NPP decommissioning came into force on the 20th of July 2011.

The first stage of V1 NPP decommissioning was in progress between 2011 and 2014. In this stage, planned dismantling activities of inactive systems and equipment and demolitions of auxiliary civil buildings were performed. Processing of radioactive wastes produced from the operation was completed. 

The first stage activities included the following:

  • Removal of inactive systems and demolition of buildings, which were no longer needed for the support of dismantling activities in the second stage of decommissioning. These included removal of systems in the turbine hall (turbine and the entire technology of the so-called secondary circuit), demolition of power transformers and switchboards structures, civil buildings related to cooling, removal of back-up systems for operation and demolition of the diesel generator station, dismantling of some external tanks and preparation of temporary and buffer storage facilities to store waste on site,
  • Modifications of civil buildings for their future use,
  • Development of Technical documentation and procurement documentation for activities planned to be implemented in the 2nd stage of V1 NPP decommissioning.

The first stage of V1 NPP decommissioning was successfully completed on the 31st of December 2014 and the 2nd stage of V1 NPP decommissioning process commenced subsequently on the 1st of January 2015.
