Representatives from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) visited company JAVYS on the 19th of March 2025. They were accompanied by representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from Vienna.
The Japanese delegation was headed by Mr. Takaya Miyazaki, Director-General of the Nuclear Accident Response Section. Japan is facing serious problems caused by the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Japanese experts are therefore looking for effective solutions for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and safe management of radioactive waste.
Therefore, one of the main objectives of the visit was to become familiar with the experience gained from the decommissioning of A1 NPP, the operation of which was terminated after two operational events in 1976 and 1977. The visitors were also interested in our experience with spent nuclear fuel storage/disposal and radioactive waste management.
During the joint visit the Japanese guests were presented with the whole history of preparation and implementation of the A1 NPP decommissioning, technological solutions to individual decommissioning stages, as well as procedures for management of radioactive waste from decommissioning. The delegation also visited the A1 NPP site and the Information Centre.
"Exchange of experience and lessons learned at an international level is really crucial for us. We are glad that we can share our know-how with our Japanese colleagues and contribute to the global safety of nuclear energy," said Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of Directors of company JAVYS.
