During the weekend company JAVYS, a. s., successfully completed one of the most complex operations of the V1 NPP decommissioning project, when it transported the reactor pressure vessel weighing more than 200 tons!

One of the most demanding activities of the project (BIDSF project D4.2) – transport of the reactor pressure vessel started on Saturday, 30 May 2020 at 07:00 a.m. and finished soon after 01:00 p.m. “It is a milestone of great significance in the entire V1 NPP decommissioning process. This operation was preceded by months of preparation, technical negotiations and meetings, designing and manufacturing of handling equipment as well as approval process of the documentation required by the regulatory authorities”, said Mr. Tomáš Klein, Member of the Board of Directors and Head of V1 Decommissioning and PMU Division of company JAVYS, a.s.

The reactor vessel, weighing more than 204 tons together with the suspension systems, had to be transported from the Unit 1 reactor shaft to the pool located in the fragmentation workplace. Final preparatory activities were performed on Saturday, and on 09:45 a.m. the actual transport of the reactor pressure vessel began. The transport was carried out using the main crane in a reactor hall with a capacity of 250 tons. At approximately 01:00 p.m. the pressure vessel was placed onto a prepared platform in the pool of the wet fragmentation workplace and transport was successfully completed. Implementation of this challenging activity represents the achievement of an important milestone not only in the D4.2 project, but also in the entire V1 NPP decommissioning process.

Company JAVYS, a.s., started to implement one of its crucial V1 NPP decommissioning projects, BIDSF project D4.2 “Dismantling of Reactor Coolant System Large Components” in cooperation with a Consortium of companies Westinghouse Spain, Westinghouse Sweden and VUJE Trnava at the end of 2017. “One of the main tasks of this project is the dismantling and fragmentation of reactor pressure vessels and reactor internals, i.e. the most activated parts of the power plant, the radioactivity of which represents almost 100% of the total power plant radioactivity”, mentioned the Head of V1 Decommissioning and PMU Division, Mr. Tomáš Klein.

In 2018 and 2019, company JAVYS, a. s., underwent a demanding process of preparation and approval of project documentation, obtaining permits for the construction of workplaces for fragmentation of activated parts and approval of documentation important from the standpoint of nuclear and radiation safety. Having completed the construction of pools for the fragmentation of reactor pressure vessels and reactor internals and their successful final inspection, the implementation of transports of these activated parts to the newly-constructed pools of fragmentation workplaces began.

In the Slovak Republic, Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a. s. (JAVYS, a.s.) provides activities in the area of back end of the nuclear energy. Its key activities include decommissioning of A1 and V1 nuclear power plants, radioactive waste management, spent nuclear fuel management, management of institutional radioactive waste and collected radioactive materials in the territory of the Slovak Republic. In all its activities, company JAVYS, a. s. pays particular attention to safety, quality and environment protection.
