Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a. s. is engaged in activities aimed at decommissioning of nuclear installations and the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. It is also a qualified organization for the management of the abandoned emitters, radioactive waste of unknown origin and radioactive materials. In Slovakia, sources of ionizing radiation of an unknown origin appear in scrapyards, ironworks, at border crossings, but also in various other places.

In 2014 qualified workers of Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a.s. secured 12 cases of radioactive waste of unknown origin, including parts of agricultural and military equipment, vault, fireboxes etc.

The captured radioactive material is after identification and documentation transported and stored in certified repositories of Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a.s. in Jaslovské Bohunice. Material complying with the limits of storage in the National Repository of Radioactive Waste is treated and conditioned into a safe form in the fibre concrete containers. Subsequently it is transported to the National Repository for the final storage. Material not complying with the limits is stored safely in the nuclear installations of the company until its storage in the planned deep repository.

Compared to 2013, when JAVYS, a.s. acted in 32 cases of radioactive materials of unknown origin capture, their occurrence significantly declined.  However, it is necessary to pay close attention to these activities in order to protect the environment in the SR from potential burdens, with the emphasis on accurate detection of originators of this material.

All the activities during the search, identification, documentation, transport of radioactive material of unknown origin, its evidence and storage is in full compliance with the current legislation, regulations and decisions of the competent supervisory authorities.
