JAVYS and Westinghouse Electric Company LLC announced the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and thus created space for cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and in the implementation of projects aimed at the development of small modular reactors (SMR).
The MoU signed between JAVYS and Westinghouse Electric Company will create a framework for the two parties to collaborate on implementation of future projects aimed at the development in the field of small modular reactors (SMR) and nuclear energy sector.
JAVYS, as a Slovak state-owned joint-stock company whose shareholder is the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic and as a shareholder of its subsidiary – company JESS, where JAVYS represents the Slovak Republic, has an obligation to develop the nuclear energy sector. And for the reason that company JAVYS, as a JESS shareholder, is responsible for building a new nuclear source, JAVYS as a professional organization on behalf of the Slovak Republic strives not only to evaluate all available technologies, but also to prepare professional documents so that the Government of the Slovak Republic can later use them within the process of deciding on the type and size of a new nuclear source.
Pavol Štuller, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of JAVYS, a. s. (Nuclear and Decommissioning Company).
"The signing of the Memorandums is the result of mutual negotiations, the ambition of which is to create more space for cooperation leading to detailed technical and business discussions and to explore the possibility of cooperation in further steps towards the implementation of SMR technology and AP1000 technology in Slovakia."
Westinghouse Electric Company is a leading supplier of safe, innovative nuclear technology, including the SMR technology.
David Durham, Westinghouse President for Energy Systems.
“Slovakia is a country that understands well the benefits of nuclear energy and we are very excited to be working with the JAVYS team to secure their energy future with our advanced, proven AP1000 and AP300 reactor technologies.”
“The U.S. Embassy in Bratislava is pleased that Westinghouse and JAVYS have signed these two memorandums of understanding, building the foundation for closer commercial cooperation between both companies in the civil nuclear energy sector. This represents another milestone in joint efforts by the governments of the United States and the Slovak Republic to achieve energy security and sustainability in Slovakia with a forward-looking focus on world-class technology,” said Gautam Rana, the U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia.
Pavol Štuller, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of JAVYS, a. s. (Nuclear and Decommissioning Company).
"The signing of the Memorandums of Understanding between JAVYS and Westinghouse Electric Company creates a framework for cooperation between the two companies in the implementation of future projects aimed at development in the field of small modular reactors and nuclear energy sector. Of course, we expect a more intense information exchange in the field of new technologies so that we can assess their suitability for inclusion in the Slovak energy network. The signing of memorandums does not establish any exclusivity, because we want to develop similar relationships with other companies as well. But they are the basis for the fact that if the Government of the Slovak Republic adopts a decision on the location and type of a new nuclear source, we would like to in a position of a responsible manager of this process so that we can evaluate the possible benefits of the types of reactors offered by company WESTINGHOUSE."
The AP300 SMR is a Gen III+ single-loop pressurized water reactor (PWR) that builds on the concept of simplicity and advanced passive safety demonstrated in the Westinghouse AP1000™ reactor, which has the same proven technology as the AP1000 with over eighteen years of safe and reliable operation with the same licensed methodology, the same supply chain, the same load tracking capabilities, the same passive safety systems, which will provide the advantage of substantial synergies between AP300 and AP1000, including construction, operation and maintenance of the power plant to company JAVYS.
