Today, Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a.s. (Nuclear and Decommissioning Company) welcomed a group of permanent representatives and delegates from member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the Jaslovské Bohunice site. The technical visit took place in cooperation with the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic and the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations, the OSCE, and other international organizations in Vienna as part of a presentation on Slovakia’s nuclear programme and the country’s experience in the areas of nuclear safety, nuclear power plants decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
“Slovakia is one of the respected countries with long-standing experience in the field of nuclear energy and, at the same time, one of the nations that has succeeded in establishing a functional and safe system for managing its nuclear ‘legacy.’ We are pleased to have had the opportunity to present the technical expertise of JAVYS to our international partners and showcase the concrete results of our work directly on-site at the nuclear facilities,” said Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JAVYS.
“Slovakia’s long-standing experience with nuclear facilities at all stages of their lifecycle, including the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, provides an excellent foundation for making a constructive contribution to international exchange, sharing technical expertise, and promoting a safety culture,” said Marta Žiaková, Chairwoman of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic.
The itinerary for the eighteen foreign guests, including permanent representatives from Ireland, Norway, Finland, Australia, and other countries, focused on technical presentations on the Slovak nuclear programme, application of safety and regulatory standards, as well as JAVYS’s activities in the field of decommissioning, management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. The programme also included a screening of a 3D film on the decommissioning of the A1 and V1 nuclear power plants and a technical site visit to selected nuclear facilities at Jaslovské Bohunice, including the V1 NPP controlled area and the Bohunice Radioactive Waste Treatment Facility.
The visit was organized as part of the campaign for the Slovak Republic’s candidacy to the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2026–2028 term. The aim of the event was to present to foreign partners Slovakia’s practical experience in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, nuclear safety, and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Company JAVYS is a long-standing partner of the IAEA in the field of the nuclear fuel cycle’s back-end. This is further evidenced by the operation of the joint IAEA/JAVYS Collaborating Centre, through which Slovakia shares its expertise and know-how with the international professional community.
