Vitrification is a high-temperature process of fixation of liquid RAW, originally used for cooling of fuel elements after their removal from reactor of A1 NPP into a glass matrix. From the point of view of long-term safe storage, the vitrification product exhibits high chemical resistance, long-term stability and low level of maceration of the fixed radioactive nuclides.
Its purpose is to clean low-contamination waste water produced in the A1 NPP decommissioning process or the radioactive waste processing processes running at The Technology for the Processing and Treatment of RAW facilities.
Radioactivity represents natural or artificially caused change of atom nucleus accompanied with emission of radioactive radiation. Artificial radioactivity is disintegration of atom nucleus (nuclide) activated by artificial submission of energy to nucleus in such a way that it becomes unstable and it disintegrates usually into two smaller nuclei with simultaneous emission of radiation alpha, beta or gamma.
V1 NPP decommissioning was subject to Environmental Impact Assessment in the years 2006-2007 with the aim of selecting the optimum alternative of its decommissioning. As a result of the assessment, the Immediate Decommissioning Alternative was selected.
